Why Use Socratic Seminars in Your Health Education Class?

What is a Socratic seminar? A Socratic seminar is a formal discussion based on a topic where the leader asks open-ended questions. Throughout the Socratic seminar students will listen closely to the comments of others, think critically, and articulate their own thoughts and their responses to the thoughts of their peers. Students will learn to work cooperatively and ask questions intelligently and civilly. The Socratic seminar allows students to apply practical methods of a topic being discussed and enables the students to view certain points from several different perspectives. Throughout the discussion the teacher should minimally intervene, and when doing so it should be to lead the students to a specific topic or ask an additional open-ended question about a topic already being discussed. Giving the students the freedom to participate in a Socratic discussion will increase student involvement and student learning.

A Socratic discussion can be utilized in any subject including history, language arts, sociology, etc. but I would like to discuss the use of a Socratic discussion in a health education class. Incorporating a Socratic seminar in your health education class will be prevalent in most topics such as living a healthy life, building good character, physical activity, nutrition and health, managing stress, emotional problems, relationships, obesity, drug use, environmental health etc. this is because these topics are very relevant to your students everyday life. You can lead your students into a discussion with these topics with a current event article, after a discussion lecture, after watching a you tube clip, and relating it to something that may be going on or happening in your school. In addition these are all topics that I’m sure your students have interest in, hear about, and participate in on an everyday basis. With a proper questioning technique by the leader (teacher) you will be able to generate a very scholarly discussion among your students, you may be surprised how passionate some of your students are about specific topics.

The key to getting your students to participate and really get involved is to ask the right questions that will generate discussion. Once you are on a specific topic in class begin a Socratic seminar by asking a question on that topic, once a few students have responded start asking questions such as what do you mean by that? How does this relate? Could you give me an example? Could you explain further, what is he/she assuming? Why do you think that right? What lead you to that believe? What’s an alternative? Are you implying this? Etc. Again you may be shocked how some students may passionately agree with some of their peers responses and comments, or disagree and begin to debate which may be a good learning experience for the students because they will begin to view the topic/discussion from multiple perspectives which may enhance the learning experience.

The purpose of a Socratic seminar is to get your students engaged in a higher level of thinking to promote learning. Incorporating Socratic seminars into your class will lead your students in discussion, debate, critical thinking, acquiring greater interests, and the ability to apply practical methods. “He who learns but does not think is lost” Confucius (551-479 BCE).

Weight Loss and Side Effects of CLA

Does Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) have any bad side effects? Does it work for weight loss? CLA has been sold for many years as a fat loss supplement based on the weight loss and body composition (i.e. losing fat and gaining muscle) changes seen in studies using mice and rats. Does is work in humans? More recently research in humans has shown that it can be used to increase fat loss. In this article we’ll look at some of the benefits of CLA as well as some of the potential side effects. In addition to weight loss studies there have been (and are currently) countless studies looking at the effects of this fatty acid on reducing inflammation, fighting cancer, and in the treatment of other conditions.

Ever since 2007, there has been an increase in use of CLA as a fat burner. This is due to the release of a meta-analysis (basically a review of several scientific studies) published in the May 2007 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition which concluded that 3.2g/d of CLA can induce moderate weight loss in humans. CLA is an attractive weight loss supplement and many people use conjugated linoleic acid as part of a fat loss supplement stack (i.e. a group of compounds and herbs taken together to maximize effects) because unlike many other weight loss supplements it is not a stimulant and you don’t suffer the nasty side effects of getting the jitters, increased heart rate, or worse – increased blood pressure. This is especially as there are not many effective options for non-stimulant fat burners on the market.

Let’s now look at two more studies that involve people taking supplemental CLA. The first study was again published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. The researchers found that when people supplemented with 3.2 g/d of CLA (this is generally the recommended dosage for weight loss purposes) they burned more fat and more specifically they burned more fat when they slept!

This is true.

Not only did the subjects that took CLA burned more fat when they slept, the fat they burned was NOT fat they had recently eaten; it was actually stored body fat that they were burning. This study gets even better as the researchers reported that the individuals that took CLA had decreased urinary protein losses. In other words the CLA group had improved protein retention when they slept. These are really interesting findings. If I owned a supplement company that sold large dosages of CLA – my new headline would be “CLA – Scientifically Proven to Burn More Body Fat and Build Muscle while you SLEEP.”

So CLA can work for weight loss but are there any side effects? Again in 2007, another study was published that looked at the effects of CLA on weight loss, this time in obese people. In this study, the participants were given CLA dosages of 0, 3.2, or 6.4 grams/day. At the end of the study the group that received the 6.4 g/d of CLA experienced a significant increase in a compound called C – reactive protein or CRP for short. C – reactive protein is a protein that is released from your liver. It is commonly used in the medical field as a general marker of the level of inflammation in your body – higher CRP means more inflammation.

While there was an increase in CRP, it was truly not clinically significant as CRP levels remained below what is considered normal (Normal CRP levels are 3mg/dL). It is also important to see realize that the people in the study that had increased CRP as a result of taking a CLA supplement were taking 2x the ‘recommended’ dose for weight loss and also that people that obese normally have higher CRP levels (this might have come into play here as well). The group that only took 3.2 grams per day did not have any increase in their CRP levels.

Based on the findings in the studies that I’ve mentioned above and the review of studies from article in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition is seems that 3.2 g/d of CLA can be safely taken to boost weight loss.

The next question that you should ask is…

What do you do with these findings? At the moment not a whole lot… CLA is a nice add-on to a fat loss program but “add-on” is the key word. CLA is perfect for nutrient stacking as combing these effects with a supplement like green tea extract (which has also been shown to boost weight loss), increased non-exercise physical activity, and multiple meals throughout the day will surely boost your fat loss. If you aren’t spot on with your nutrition, training with weights 3x per week, and doing 3 interval sessions per week then don’t waste your time with CLA and focus on the more important things.

How to Strengthen Your Lower Esophageal Sphincter

The lower esophageal sphincter (LES) muscle is situated between the stomach and the esophagus (throat). It opens to allow food to pass from the esophagus into the stomach. It closes to keep food and acid from flowing up from the stomach into the esophagus. Acid is produced in your stomach to help break down food for digesting. When the lower esophageal sphincter muscle is weak, acid flows up into the esophagus and can irritate and burn inner parts of the body.

So, have you found out that you have gastroesphageal reflux disease (GERD)? Many people don’t even know that they have it. It effects infants as well as adults. Heartburn is the most common symptom of GERD. Other terms for heartburn are acid indigestion and acid reflux. More than 25 million adults suffer from heartburn daily.

Causes of Gastroesphageal Reflux Disease

Some doctors believe that a hiatal hernia may weaken the lower esophageal sphincter muscle and cause reflux. Reflux means the return flow of a liquid. A hiatal hernia is caused when the upper stomach moves up into the chest through a small opening in the diaphragm. Coughing may cause a hiatal hernia. A person of any age can have one. Many healthy people over the age of 50 have a small one. If it is severe you may feel a constant pain behind your breast plate. The pain can last for months.

The Problem with Soy

Isoflavones are chemical compounds. Glycitein, genistein and daidzein are isoflavones found in soy. They mimic estrogen. Estrogen weakens the lower esophageal sphincter muscle. Soy is found in most every food today because it is a cheap commodity. If you’ll exam the ingredients on the packages that you purchase, you’ll see that soy is in bread, peanut butter, coffee mate non-dairy creamer, salad dressing, infant formula. The list is endless. The vegetable oil on the shelves in grocery stores is usually soybean oil, unless the oil is specifically labeled such as olive, safflower, sunflower, almond etc.

Other Foods

Certain foods and beverages can weaken the lower esophageal sphincter muscle. It would be helpful to avoid tobacco, alcohol, coffee (caffeinated and decaffeinated), caffeine, carbonated beverages, chocolate, peppermint, refined sugar and pastries, citrus, fried foods, fat and fatty foods, soy products (unless fermented), and especially avoid tomatoes and tomato products. Tomatoes are very acidic. Think twice before you eat that delicious pizza.

You must be very conscientious about reading the ingredients on the packages of the food that you purchase. Sugar is always harmful to the body and is in most food. Tomato is also in a lot of packaged food.

Foods to Encounter

Aloe Vera Gel Gets Two Thumbs Up

Aloe Vera Gel (whole leaf) could be taken before A.M. and P.M. meals. It is a natural remedy for acid reflux. The suggested dose is 4 oz. per day. If you have ulcers it would be a good idea to take a tablespoon (less of a dose). Until you feel the ulcers are healed. Otherwise too much Aloe Vera Gel may exasperate the ulcer condition.

Aloe Vera Gel coats the throat and stomach. Aloe Vera is a healing plant. Over time the lower esophageal sphincter muscle should strengthen. I’d give it a good year. A year is a normal length of time for anything in the body to reverse from disease and heal.

Ginger Is Beneficial

Drinking ginger tea can help keep stomach acid under control. It may take a couple of weeks until you see a difference. The suggested dose is 3 cups per day, with distilled water. It is best to drink the tea without sugar, honey or lemon juice. Refined sugar doesn’t do the body any good. It and citrus should be avoided anyway. The tea should be steeped.

How to Steep Tea

  1. Boil distilled water
  2. Pour 6 oz. of boiled water over a tea bag in a cup
  3. Place a saucer on top of the cup for 5-10 minutes

After you’ve steeped your tea, it is a good habit to squeeze the tea bag with your spoon up against the inside wall of the cup. Doing that and steeping enhances the strength of the tea.

Here insistence is on the importance of prevention of diseases. It is racer wiser than treating a diseases after allowing it to occur. The cause for all disease is the violation of these rules of conducts.

The Many Uses of a Biochemistry Analyser

A biochemistry analyser is a term which can refer to any number of different instruments used to analyze and measure the characteristics of various samples from biological sources.
